Affiliation:

We are affiliated with the General Council of the Assemblies of God, (offices in Springfield, Missouri), and with the Northern New England District of the Assemblies of God, (offices in Portland, Maine).  We join in missions, in education, in credentialing our ministry team, and we join in affirming biblical teaching. Worldwide we have about 63 million adherents.  In Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, we have about 120 churches.  When we meet together at District Council, or Sectional Councils, we are so blessed by our many friends.  Our leadership team in Portland is fantastic!

In the Assemblies we are in a “voluntary cooperative” relationship with our leadership in Portland (Maine), and in Missouri, and other churches.  This is important to us. If we have difficulty in any way we can get excellent help from our leadership who are there to assist the churches and ministers.  This is the way we do things—as a team.  We could be independent, or to join another organization, but we have chosen to be a part of the Assemblies’ team, and that cooperation works in and through our local church.

WE BELIEVE… as to the Bible:

…the Bible is God’s word and tells his plan for us.

…there is only one true God— revealed as God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (Commonly known as the Trinity).

…Jesus is God’s Son.

…everyone has broken God’s commandments.

…Jesus lived a sinless life, died on a cross for our sins, was buried, and rose from the dead three days later, and ascended to heaven.  By faith (trust) in him, and turning away from sin, we can have everlasting life with him.

…in water baptism by immersion after salvation, and in communion (the “Lord’s Supper”) as a remembrance of Christ’s suffering and death for our salvation.

…that the work and gifts of the Holy Spirit are for us today.  (As in the Book of Acts, I Corinthians, etc.)

…that God desires that we become like Jesus, who did God’s will perfectly and without sin. (This is called “sanctification”, it begins at salvation and is a lifelong process.

…that God heals.

…that we are to always be ready for the return of Jesus.

…that all will be judged by God and that there is a heaven to gain and a hell to flee.

WE BELIEVE... as to social issues and church practice:

… that an embryo is not something to experiment upon, but is human life.

… that marriage is good and created by God, and is to be between a man and a woman, only.  This is true “diversity”, male and female together.

…that abortion is not “reproductive freedom” but a cruel and demonic lie to the mother and the end of life on earth for the child.  (We have women in our church who have had abortions and are ready and willing to encourage you keep your baby if you have not yet aborted, and to receive the love and forgiveness of Jesus if you have aborted a child.  “I’ll hold you in heaven.”  This is the hope for those who have aborted their children. We do not condemn those who have had abortions, but offer healing in Christ.)

… that a sexual relationship is for marriage only, husband and wife.

… that God blesses us in many ways and we ought to give generously, including of our finances.  However, we see as error the extreme “name-it-claim-it”  or “seed faith” teachings on “Christian” television that is in essence rank materialism.

… that all spiritual experience is to be tested by the scriptures and accepted or rejected by its alignment with scripture.

…that homosexuality and lesbianism is not God’s plan for mankind.  We do understand that most gays and lesbians feel strongly, “God made me this way.”  However, we have nearly always had in attendance ex-gays and ex-lesbians who have been set free from this lifestyle.  We are not homophobic and oppose all acts of violence or unkindness to those who are gay and lesbian.  Though we do not agree with the gay and lesbian lifestyles, we are friends with gays and lesbians in the community.

…that gambling, including the lottery, is addictive and to be avoided.

… that alcohol consumption and tobacco use is destructive.

… that pornography is the debasement of God’s creation and is abusive in every form.  God provides the means to break all addictions, including pornography.  We have found porn addiction to be perhaps more addictive than crack cocaine.

… that the “poor” in the Bible are of two categories: the unfortunate poor and the lazy poor.  We sin if we don’t help the unfortunate poor, we sin if we do help the lazy poor.  “If a man won’t work, neither should he eat.” This is about laziness... “won’t work”, not “can’t work”.   That God is our resource, not government.

… that those who work with children should be accountable.  The Assemblies of God were pioneers in developing protective measures for children in churches.  We reference check our workers and for many years have used a “two-up” system where no child is ever alone with one adult.  We are greatly saddened that many have been abused by those who claim to represent God.  We have never practiced re-locating pastors who have had sexual sin, in order to “cover their tracks.”
